Compton Scattering of Fe Kα Lines in Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

چکیده
Compton scattering of X-rays in the bulk flow of the accretion column in magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) can significantly shift photon energies. We present Monte Carlo simulations based on a nonlinear algorithm demonstrating the effects of Compton scattering on the H-like, He-like and neutral Fe Kα lines produced in the postshock region of the accretion column. The peak line emissivities of the photons in the post-shock flow are taken into consideration and frequency shifts due to Doppler effects are also included. We find that line profiles are most distorted by Compton scattering effects in strongly magnetized mCVs with a low white dwarf mass and high mass accretion rate and which are viewed at an oblique angle with respect to the accretion column. The resulting line profiles are most sensitive to the inclination angle. We have also explored the effects of modifying the accretion column width and using a realistic emissivity profile. We find that these do not have a significant overall effect on the resulting line profiles. A comparison of our simulated line spectra with high resolution Chandra/HETGS observations of the mCV GK Per indicates that a wing feature redward of the 6.4 keV line may result from Compton recoil near the base of the accretion column.

Iron Kα line widths in magnetic cataclysmic variables
Following a recent report that AO Psc has broad iron Kα emission lines we have looked at the ASCA spectra of 15 magnetic cataclysmic variables. We find that half of the systems have Kα lines broadened by ∼ 200 eV, while the remainder have narrow lines. We argue that the Doppler effect is insufficient to explain the finding and propose that the lines originate in accretion columns on the verge o...
متن کاملThe Anisotropic Transfer of Resonance Photons in Hot Plasmas on Magnetized White Dwarfs
In order to confirm the anisotropic effect of resonance photons in hot accretion columns on white dwarfs in magnetic cataclysmic variables, proposed by Terada et al.(2001), systematic studies with ASCA of 7 polars and 12 intermediate polars are performed. The equivalent widths of He-like Fe Kα line of polars are found to be systematically modulated at their spin periods in such a way that it in...
متن کاملOn the efficiency of production of the Fe K α emission line in neutral matter
The absolute luminosity of the Fe Kα emission line from matter illuminated by X-rays in astrophysical sources is nontrivial to calculate except when the line-emitting medium is optically-thin to absorption and scattering. We characterize the Fe Kα line flux using a dimensionless efficiency, defined as the fraction of continuum photons above the Fe K shell absorption edge threshold energy that a...
متن کاملOn the iron Kα complex in magnetic cataclysmic variables
We present a compilation of spectra of the iron Kα region in magnetic cataclysmic variables, using data from the Chandra-HETG. The H-like, He-like and fluorescent components are clearly resolved, and there are hints of the structure within each component. The different shape of the He-like component in AM Her might be related to greater cyclotron cooling in this star. A surprising absence of Do...
متن کاملModels of the iron Kα fluorescence line and the Compton shoulder in irradiated accretion disk spectra
We present a full set of model atmosphere equations for the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole irradiated by hard X-ray lamp of power-law spectral distribution. Model equations allow for multiple Compton scattering of radiation on free electrons, and for large relative photon-electron energy exchange at the time of scattering. We present spectra in specific intensities integrated o...
